Heritage Square consists of the Gravenhurst Opera House, Gravenhurst Library, War Memorial, Bethune Statue and Carnegie Arts Centre.
Carnegie Arts Centre formerly the Carnegie Library
(circa 1923).
Nineteen years in the making, Gravenhurst's Carnegie Library finally opened on May 01, 1923.
Andrew Carnegie, one of the mega-tycoons
of the industrial age,
allocated much of his wealth to the construction of libraries.
Grants from his foundation went into the construction
of 1,700 libraries in Ontario.
Gravenhurst received $7,000
for building purposes. Described as 'cottage' style with the only distinguishing feature being a gable end over the door, this blueprint was only used in Gravenhurst,
Glencoe and Stouffville.
Carnegie Library was used as the public library until 1999.
At that time, the library moved into a new facility
and the Carnegie Library was turned into an Arts Centre.
Future plans include development and presentation
of a wide variety of music and arts
with a Muskoka connection or theme.
